The story

Courage on both sides of the Atlantic

Volunteers from the Caribbean flew with the Royal Air Force. The Tuskegee Airmen flew with the United States Army Air Forces, today's US Air Force. Both fought fascism abroad and racism at home, and their contribution helped shape the modern world.

This collection brings the two stories together in one commemorative box set.

During the Second World War thousands of men and women from the Caribbean volunteered to serve with the Royal Air Force. Hundreds flew as aircrew, as pilots, navigators, wireless operators and air gunners, and many more served on the ground.

At home the islands raised money to buy aircraft for Britain. The Jamaica Gleaner ran its own Spitfire fund, and a facsimile of its comic book is part of this collection.

After the war many returned to help rebuild Britain, some of them aboard HMT Empire Windrush in 1948.

United States Army Air Forces

The Tuskegee Airmen

The First Top Guns

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first Black military aviators in the United States Army Air Forces, trained at Tuskegee in Alabama at a time when the armed forces were still segregated.

Flying with the 332nd Fighter Group, they escorted bombers over Europe in P-51 Mustangs with their tails painted red, earning the name Red Tails. Their fight was called the Double Victory: against fascism abroad and against racism at home.

In 1949 a team from the 332nd won the propeller aircraft category at the first US Air Force gunnery meet. The First Top Guns, a three-panel pop-up display in the box, tells that story.

Trinidadian singer Mona Baptiste was heard on the radio in Trinidad and Tobago, and later on BBC radio, during and after the war years. She helped the war effort by raising money and making care packages.

In 1948 she sailed to Britain aboard HMT Empire Windrush, alongside Caribbean and African aircrew coming to help rebuild a country devastated by war. This photograph shows her with Royal Air Force personnel on arrival at Tilbury.

Her coin shows her alongside the aircrew on the obverse, with the Lancaster and the B-17 Flying Fortress on the reverse.

Singer, actress and civil rights campaigner Lena Horne was one of the best known entertainers of the war years, famous for the film and song Stormy Weather.

She performed for the troops and refused to accept segregated audiences, a stand that made her a hero to Black servicemen.

The coin was inspired by this photograph of her with the 332nd Fighter Group. The obverse shows Lena with the Tuskegee Airmen, the reverse the Spitfire and the P-51D Mustang.

The Royal Warrant

The Royal Warrant printed inside the presentation case lid

Royal Warrants are granted to companies that supply goods or services to the Royal Household. Worcestershire Medal Service Ltd of Bromsgrove has made medals and honours for the Royal Household under Queen Elizabeth II and now King Charles III.

The two coins in this collection are struck by Worcestershire Medal Service, and their warrant appears inside the lid of every presentation case. Owners also have access to the company's aftercare service, with cleaning and polishing whenever it is needed.

Engineering

The Merlin and the Shadow Works

Back of the Merlin card

The Rolls-Royce Merlin was a liquid-cooled V12 that became one of the most important aero engines of the Second World War. It powered the Spitfire, the Hurricane and the Lancaster, and the P-51 Mustang flew with a licence-built version made by Packard in the United States.

To keep up with wartime demand, Merlins were built in secret “shadow factories”. One of them was at Crewe, a site that went on to build Rolls-Royce and Bentley motor cars after the war and is today the home of Bentley Motors. At the time Rolls-Royce and Bentley were one company.

The metal in every Merlin card comes from an engine flown in combat in 1944, through Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar, the former RAF station that is now a museum and aircraft restoration centre.
